Brief Historical Background

     Benguet State University is one of the few accredited government schools in the Philippines to offer a Master of Science in Entomology, a profession that is wanting worldwide. The program is offered by the Department of Entomology under the College of Agriculture. Majority of the graduates of the program are employed in state colleges and universities, some are in the Department of Agriculture while others are in then local government units or private organizations serving as researchers, managers, and/or extension workers. There were also foreign students who graduated in the program in the university, majority of them were from Nepal.

     The Master of Science in Entomology in meets the minimum requirements for graduate education by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in the Philippines (CHED Memorandum Order 36, s. 1994). It has a Level IV status after it was accredited in 2014 by the Association of Accrediting Agencies of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACUP), an accredited body by CHED. The Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, the base program of all the graduate programs in agriculture in the college is also accredited Level IV.

     MS Entomology started as a major field in the Master in Agriculture in 1981 (BOT Res. No. 64). After 12 years, it was enhanced into a degree as Master of Science in Entomology in (BOR Res. No. 610, s. 1994) alongside with the other fields of specialization in agriculture such as Plant Pathology, Horticulture, Soil Science, and Agronomy. At present, there are five special fields. These are Organic Pest Management that includes Biological Control, Medical Entomology, Insect Ecology, Acarology, and Entrepreneurial Entomology that includes Sericulture, and Apiculture or Beekeeping.

     The curriculum was structured to enable full time regular students to complete the program in two years by offering 12 units per semester and 4 units in the summer term. It also accommodates working students by offering the courses during Saturdays and/or outside office hours during weekdays.
