Research, Development and Extension (RDE) have always been considered as inherent functions of the Benguet State University even when it only operated as a farm school in the 1920's. Back then, students were inculcated with the love of scientific inquiry as well ingrained with the commitment to serve their communities well, not being only excellent examples of what a successful farmer should be; but also by persisting in carrying out genuine agricultural development in the countryside. As is the practice now, students then were asked to do supervised research. They were provided farm lots to develop. As a result, a huge portion of the University's land area then was a virtual demonstration site of how successful farming should be. Farmers often visited the site to learn recent technologies in agriculture and obtain planting materials of new kinds and varieties of crops and improved breeds of livestock. But it was not only in-campus that RDE programs were visible. The Institution's faculty and staff were encouraged to live with the barrio folks and share their expertise in crop and animal management. With the creation of the Benguet State University in 1986, RDE Programs were placed under the Office of the Vice President for Research and Extension (OVPRE). The move enabled the University's RDE programs to be more systematic and relevant to the needs of the University and the region, as well. The OVPRE has institutionalized a harmonious relationship among the staff and integration of RDE activities to enhance more functional and productive program. Linkages and sharing of resources have been strengthened for a more effective operation. Presently, the VPRE supervises the activities of the Director for Research Services and Director for Extension Services and the RDE Institutes. In addition, the VPRE also serves as director of the Highland Agriculture and Resources Research and Development Consortion (HARRDEC) which is based at BSU. The VPRE is assisted by the RDE Executive Committee (EXECOM) in terms of administrative matters. Today, BSU continues to perform its RDE functions with much sincerity and commitment, in the hope that it will benefit the lives of those it selflessly serves. |
