Crop Improvement

1. Cross Garden Pea 38 had significantly the highest number of seeds per pod. CGP 39 and CGP 152 had the highest number of pods per plot and heaviest pods per plot. CGP 39, CGP 152 and CGP 92 were top yielders producing 3.6 tons of green-shelled pea.

2. Cross Garden Pea 11 A significantly outyielded CGP 14 and Chinese Dark Green. It also remarkably produced higher seed yield than CGP 14. CGP 11 had significantly higher seed weight.

3. Taichung, Chinese garden pea, and 89-001 have better quality pods and command higher price.

4. New varieties of garden pea such as BSU-IPB CGP 14 (Trinidad), BSU-IPB CGP 11, 18, 22 and 89-001 were developed.

5. Pole snap bean B-21, CPV 18, Hav 66, Hav 71, Hav 81, and Hav 112 have high marketable yield and acceptable pod quality. Likewise, CPV 53, CPV 58, CPV 60 A, CPV 60 B, CPV 63, CPV 64, and CPV 66 are potential varieties.

6. N 2643, Hav 112, and CPV 18 are among the pole snap bean entries with high yield, acceptable pod quality, and resistance to rust. For bush bean, Stringless Valentine, BBL 274, Hab 416, Royal Nel, Hab 63 show promising characteristics.

7. Bush bean BBL 274, HAB 424, HAB 420, Derby, Torrent, and Landmark have high marketable yield and good pod quality.

8. Broccoli cultivars Nomad, Legacy, Pirate and Marathon have desirable yield and quality performance. For cabbage, alternative recommended varieties of Scorpio are Pacifica, Regalia, Green Max, and Rareball. Milky Way and White Flash are still the best performing cauliflower varieties.

9. Two potato varieties, Snowden and 385130.5 with a yield of 30.38 and 20.50 t/ha, respectively were selected for processing. Both have moderate resistance to late blight.

10. BSU-PO3 (Igorota) and BSU-PO4 (Solibao) are potato processing varieties adapted for high and mid-elevation production.

11. BSU-PO3 (Igorota) and BSU-PO4 (Solibao) possess the qualities of high dry matter and starch content, good chip color, oiliness and crispy flavor, the general qualities that major fast food chains require.

12. The potential clones for variety release include 37317.7, 379706.34, IP84004.7, and IP81001.1. New lowland potato variety Raniag is also adapted in highland areas.

13. Out of 48 clones of potato evaluated, 10 were selected based on superior/acceptable agronomic traits. The yield of selected clones ranged from 9.72 to 46.03 tons per hectare.

14. Potato cultivars, namely: Atlantic, China, Solibao, Granola, Igorota, Raniag, Sunchip, Ranger Russet, Hermes, Fang-60, Chipeta, and Kennebec were found tolerant to bacterial wilt.

15. Potato clones IP84004, 13.1.1, 13.8.1, and CM 9 were initially found resistant to leafminer and late blight, high yielding (higher than Igorota and Granola), with medium maturity, and with good processing quality.

16. There are 30 potato varieties/ clones with potentials for processing and disease resistance acquired by the NPRCRTC: 5 are maintained in in-vitro, 30 are being evaluated for stem cutting production, 27 are being evaluated in yield trials, and 7 are in advanced yield trials.

17. IP80047 and 13.8.1 are promising potato clones (they have yield higher than Granola and Igorota; are moderately resistant to late blight and leafminer; and have high dry matter content).

18. In open field seed production of potato, the use of pea-sized GO tubers of Igorota variety produce bigger and more number of G1 seed tubers than Granola.

19.IP84004.7 sweetpotato variety is for recommendation to the Philippine Seed Board for official release.

20. Sweetpotato varieties Dakol, BSU entry and Tres Colores, VISCA entry are highly acceptable. However, OPS 106 and OPS 102, both VISCA entries, have the highest dry matter content.

21. Among the sweetpotato cultivars evaluated, LG-19A-10, 90-02-07, and OPS-102, are consistently rated as moderately resistant to weevil whereas OPS-104 was rated resistant to weevil.

22. Among the sweetpotato varieties evaluated, PSBSP 17 has the highest root mean yield of 22.27 t/ha for dry and wet season trials while Tres Colores has the highest dry matter content of 35.46 % and apparently the only accepted variety.

23. Tagalog sweetpotato variety yields 12.34 tons/ha. Miracle has the highest general acceptability rating and dry matter content of 38.50%.

24. Highly preferred sweetpotato varieties for processing are Miracle, Sumabila, Mestiza, Violet, Kal-booy and Tres Flores with dry matter contents are ranging from 31.8 to 35.8 percent.

25. Sweetpotato varieties Tagalog and Comiles significantly had the highest yield of 14.69 and 13.99 t/ha, respectively. Comiles significantly had the highest number and weight of marketable roots.

26. Tres Flores sweetpotato variety significantly had the highest dry matter of 36.12% at one month after storage and increased to 42.21% at 2 months storage. It also had the lowest weight loss.

27. Three sweetpotato varieties namely Comiles, Tagalog, and Violet had the highest acceptability rating as influenced by the attractive purplish color of Comiles and yellow colored chips of Tagalog.

28. In the demonstration farm of sweetpotato in Tarlac farm planted in riverbanks, NCT entry SG 94-17-17 produced the highest marketable yield of 360 g/hill. Result also of the demonstration farm of Mr. Rodrigo Dulay, showed that Tagalog was the highest yielder with 393.3 g/hill and Immitlog 373.3 g/hill.

29. There are 155 sweetpotato varieties/entries being maintained ( ex-situ ) in the field; 10 are maintained in-vitro ; 20 are being evaluated under the NCT trials; 35 are in drought tolerance trials; and 10 are being mass propagated for processing and product innovation trials.

30. The BSU SPO2 sweetpotato variety with recommended name of `Bengueta' was approved by the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC) for national release.

31. Tagalog, Comiles and PSBSP-17 are sweetpotato entries that have high yields in highland conditions.

32. Haponita sweetpotato variety with origin from Japan is recommended for wine, juice, and haleya processing.

33. A taro clone BG-02 “Mindanao” is high yielding with moderate resistance to blight.

34. Six apple varieties were identified to be promising and adaptable. These are Rome Beauty, Dorset Golden, Ana, Prince Noble, Cahort # 1, and Winter Banana.

35. Strawberry variety Selva x Toyonoka showed good fruit firmness. Tioga as check variety had better and good firmness which is a desired character for a good shipping quality. Selva x Toyonoka outyielded numerically Tioga variety; its percentage sugar content was also comparable to the check variety (Tioga).

36. Rice variety PR 27489 and PR 26359-3-2-4-1 are producing 4571 and 3246 kg/ha, respectively or a yield advantage of 141 % to 71.4 %.

37. New accessions of anthurium for pot culture are RCM 18 (light orange), RCM 13 (white, double), and RCM 19 (bright orange).

38. In bench and pot culture of anthurium, high ROI was obtained by growing RCM 5, RCM 11, and RCM 12, the most preferred in the market.

39. Accepted new varieties of anthurium tested on farmer's field were the following: Grand Gala, Konfetti, Lou Blessy, Osiana, Alra Pink, Vicki Brown, Vivaldi, Lara Orange and Lady X. Acceptance of new varieties was based to the following important characteristics: high yielding, long to extra long cutflower stems, big blooms, hardiness and resistance to insect pests and diseases, good market acceptance and demand, good postharvest handling characteristics (long vaselife, thick sturdy stems, ease of handling), can withstand strong and constant heavy rains (field variety).

40. Performance of 22 anthurium accessions developed from in-vitro were evaluated and their features characterized.

41. A total of 2,714 chrysanthemum mother plants from 27 varieties were established. From these, 30,756 tip cuttings were harvested with 80% field survival. A total of 16, 708 rooted cuttings were used for on-station trials and IPM screening studies.

42. Four oyster mushroom varieties (Pleurotus) and two shiitake (Lentinula) strains are adapted to Benguet conditions. These are P. hybridus (white and gray) and P. sajor-caju No. 503 and 03. For Lentinula, the edodes no. 5050 and the BCI strain adapted very well to the locality The return on investment for the Pleurotus strains ranged from 150 to 250% while Lentinula species ranged from 150 to 200 %, making mushroom growing very profitable in Benguet.
