The
year 2008 has been another fruitful year for BSU.
During the year, the University attained
level II and III accreditation of most of its academic curricular
programs under the Accrediting Agency for Chartered Colleges and
Universities of the Philippines (AACCUP). Also, the university,
for the first time made it to the Search for Outstanding Students
of the Philippines (TOSP). A BSE student, Mr. Carmelo Madinno was
selected as one of the TOSPs, a climax to the long line of BSU students
who made it to the finalist list. National focus was likewise on
the University during the launching of the veggie-enriched noodles
in Manila which was personally graced by Her Excellency President
Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
In
March, the BSU Arabica Coffee Production and Processing Project
was certified Organic by the International Marketecologybased
in Switzerland with the financial help of Figaro Foundation. This
is the first and the only certified organic coffee plantation
in the Philippines. In April, the first tissue cultured chayote
bore fruits. In May, a partnership agreement with the Princess
of Naradiwas University in Thailand for faculty and student exchange
was forged. The University likewise performed well in the Licensure
Exam for Teachers and Placed 3rd Top Performing School under Category
(schools with 300-400 examinees), and 10th Top Performing School
in the Licensure Exam for Librarians. Mr. Nover Matso was 3rd

graduate and the start of the offering of organic agriculture
as a major field in BS Agriculture. The Certificate in Organic
Agriculture was also offered as a pilot course at the Open University
in collaboration with the International Crops Research Institute
for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT). On the same month, two potato
varieties developed by NPRTRC namely: Gloria Patatas also known
as Gloria Kamaptengan named after Her Excellency PGMA, and Bengueta
Patatas, were approved by the National Root Crop Technical Working
and Varietal Improvement Group.
In

Province visited the University and donated computer units and
other IT facilities. In November, two research outputs from BSU
garnered first and second place in the Search for Best Regional
HEI Research Programs. The R&D Program of the Semi-Temperate
Vegetable Research and Development Center (STVRDC) garnered 3rd
place at the National Level. This research center was established
with funding from the Philippines-Institutional University Cooperation
Program of VLIR Belgium (PIUC-VLIR). In addition, the Civil Service
Commission gave PASADA awards to the Administrative Office and
University Registrar’s Office for their good performance
while the University PRAISE Committee garnered 1st place in the
2008 Search for Best Agency PRAISE Committee by the ivil Service
Commission (CSC).
Also
recently, our students showed excellent performance in the Search
for Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (TAYO), through the entry
of the Society of Scholars and Grantees Organization (SSGO). This
is the fourth time that a student organization in the University
achieved such feat in the TAYO Search. Three students were similarly
given the 2008 Benguet Leadership Awards for Students by the Province
of Benguet apart from the science, sports and athletics contests
in the regional level. There are other meritorious accomplishments
of the University which make us proud to say that 2008 is indeed
a fruitful year. All these were made possible with the concerted
efforts of everyone in the University including all our students
and partner institutions.
