He went to college at the University of the Philippines , Los Banos, Laguna where he earned a degree in BS Agriculture in 1974, a masters degree in soil science in 1981 and a doctorate degree in soil science in 1988. He also earned a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), New South Wales , Australia in Geographical Information System ( GIS ) and Remote Sensing in Agricultural and Environmental Planning. He was a scholar of the Australian International Development Assistance Bureau (AIDAB) and the first faculty member at BSU to be given postdoctoral grant. Before assuming the BSU presidency Dr. Rogelio D. Colting was vice president for research and extension from October 1996 to March 2003. He rose from the ranks starting as instructor in 1976. The president received numerous recognition awards as educator, researcher, extension worker and civil servant in different levels. He is also a member of scientific and honor societies and civic organizations. Dr. Rogelio D. Colting is married to Dr. Lita Molitas-Colting, a professor at the Department of Entomolgy under the College of Agriculture . They have three children and two grandchildren. Their eldest is Gretchen Shagami C. Mangahas, a BSDevCom graduate at UPLB, she is followed by Clarice Shalumai M. Colting, a BSBiology graduate also at UPLB and the youngest is Rogelio "Job" M. Colting, Jr. a student of BSIT at AMA-Baguio City.
