BSU Marks an Increase in some AFNR Courses Enrollment
06.30.09 - JSTabangcura & BMBao-idang

Records from the Office of the University Registrar showed a slight increase in the number of freshmen enrollees to some AFNR (Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources) courses.

Bachelor of Science in Agriculture freshmen enrollees increased by 23.67%, Bachelor of Science in Development Communication freshmen enrollees increased by 26%, Diploma in Agroforestry freshmen enrollees increased by 70.59%, Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science freshmen enrollees increased by 29.82%, Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering freshmen enrollees increased by 31.15%, and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine freshmen enrollees increased by 51.51%.

Alarmed by the observed decrease of enrollees to AFNR courses among SUCs (State Universities and Colleges) different government agencies made efforts to stop the trend through different programs such as the “Program on Enhancing the Demand for AFNR Courses,” of PCARRD that granted funds to the “Binnadang Project” currently being implemented by SUCs in CAR.

The declining enrolment in AFNR courses when left unchecked would inevitably lead to the shortage of professional manpower in different AFNR sectors which are important in meeting social goals of food security, poverty alleviation and sustainable development.
For non-AFNR courses freshmen enrollees to Bachelor of Science in Applied Statistics increased by 2.13%, freshmen enrollees to Bachelor of Science in Information Technology increased by 11.11%, freshmen enrollees to Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurial Technology increased by 26%, freshmen enrollees to Bachelor of Science in Home Economics increased by 15.73%, freshmen enrollees to Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics increased by 18.52%, and freshmen enrollees to Bachelor of Science in Nursing increased by 71.43%.

This is based on the final summary of enrolment for the 1st semester, school year 2008-2009 and the partial summary of enrolment for the 1st semester, school year 2009-2010 since there are still late enrollees.
