Organic Market Launched at BSU 06.30.09 - SLKudan To create awareness and encourage more people to be involved in organic farming, Benguet State University through the Office of Extension Services, then led by Dr. Julia A. Solimen launched the BSU Organic Market. The launching on May 25 where different organic vegetables, animals, processed products and grafted seedlings earned 38,020.00 Php. despite the heavy downpour. The organic products marketed came from the different BSU projects such as the organic farm and the Balili Experimental Area and from organic farms such as the Tinoy-an’s farm in Tuba and the Cosmic farm in La Trinidad. The activity started the implementation of the BIGS (BSU Internal Guarantee System) first to the BSU production projects then to other areas of the university and farms who would accept and follow GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) in general and organic farming. BSU project managers follow the organic standards set by the OCCP (Organic Certification Center of the Philippines) and the IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movement). Two teams were organized to implement the BIGS, Dr. Antonio B. Otculan heads the Inspector Team with Jamesly T. Andres, Engr. Eric Tinoy-an, Mr. Casiano S. Pagadan and Mr. Isidro B. Awal as members. The Certification Team is led by Prof. Val Macanes with Prof. Bonnie S. Ligat, Prof. Andres A. Basalong, Dr. Jose G. Balaoing and Dr. Bernard S. Tad-awan as members. The BSU organic market opens every Wednesday beside the Research and Extension Building at Km. 5, La Trinidad. |
