NPRCRTC Researchers Presents Paper in Bangkok, Thailand

     Dr. Donita K. Simongo and Dr. Ines C. Gonzales from the Crop Improvement Section of the NPRCRTC (Northern Philippine Rootcrops Research and Training Center) travelled to Bangkok, Thailand on February 23-27 to present their papers in the 2009 ISSAASS (International Society for Southeast Asian Agricultural Sciences) International Congress.

     Dr. Gonzales presented her paper, ‘Economy Participatory Evaluation of Sweetpotato Cultivars for Wine and Juice Processing in the Cordillera’ (Oral Presentation) and Dr. Simongo presented her paper, ‘Germplasm Evaluation of Pathogen-Tested Potato Accession Grown from Apical Cuttings in the Philippine Highlands’ (Oral Presentation) and ‘Dry Matter Partitioning in Potato Genotypes Under Organic Production in the Philippine Highlands’ (Poster Presentation).

     This year’s congress is sponsored by ISAAS in collaboration with Kasertsart University. With the theme, “Agriculture for the 3E’s: Economy, Environment and Energy, the congress aimed to promote science and technology in Southeast Asia.

     Apart from presenting their papers, the NPRTRC researchers joined discussions on key issues in Bio-energy, Agro-technology, Alternative Farming Systems, Food Safety and Security, Sufficiency Economy Philosophy, Sustainable Bio-resource Management, Community Empowerment and Trans-boundary Agriculture.

     According to Dr. Simongo, the congress thought her the following: to promote the progress and development of science and technology related to agricultural sciences through research and publication and; that the generation of research into appropriate technologies and the diffusion and utilization of these technologies should be contributed in order to increase farm productivity and subsequently achieving the goals of the national government.

     They also mentioned that their experience in Bangkok gave them the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive discussion on how agriculture in this ever-changing world can be progressed from the view point of economy, environment and energy in achieving sustainable agriculture and rural development.
Six countries were represented during the congress which includes the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Japan. There were also visitors from India, Pakistan, Korea and Iran.
