Tissue-Cultured Strawberry Runners from the BSU-OES
Yields 30% more 02.10.09 - STGayao Strawberry farmers of the strawberry fields and Longlong, La Trinidad estimated a 21-30% increase in yield and 38% increase in productivity using tissue-cultured strawberry runners distributed by BSU's Office of Extension Services. The farmers observed that the tissue-cultured strawberry runners also has increased productivity because they quickly recover after transplanting, they have good vigor and large foliage, and they bear large and good shaped fruits early. For 2009, the BSU-OES plans to distribute 200,000 tissue-cultured runners for the 2008-2009 cropping season. The annual distribution of tissue-cultured strawberry runners to farmers is an offshoot a 2005 study titled, "RDE Needs Assessment of Farmers in the Swamp Area and Neighboring Barangays in La Trinidad, Benguet". Results of the study showed that there was no available source of disease-free planting materials especially on strawberry production. If a plant gets virus infected, its yield potential can be reduced by 50-70%. Tissue culture is one way of eliminating viruses from plants. At present there are 4,500 tissue-cultured mother plants in the two greenhouses and in the field of the BSU-Office of Extension Services at the Balili Experimental Area for further runner production. The greenhouses and the tissue-culture laboratory was funded by the Commission on Higher Education thru Dr. Saturnino M. Ocampo. |
