BSU Bags CHED Best Institution Research Program
2008 in Regional and National Levels 01.20.09 -AMKimeu Two BSU research programs bagged the 2008 CHED Best HEI (Higher Education Institution) Research Program awards in the regional and national levels out of 85 entries from the entire country. The research program titled, "Semi-Temperate Vegetable R&D Program: Contributing to the Sustainability of Vegetable Production and Livelihood Opportunities in CAR" led by Dr. Luciana M. Villanueva ranked 1st place in the regional competition and 3rd place in the national competition. Trophies and cash prizes of Php 300,000.00 for the regional level and another Php 300,000,00 for the national level were awarded to the researchers. The eight projects under the program are: "Environmental Consequences of Pesticide and Fertilizer Usage in Food Production" by Carlito P. Laurean and Ho-ti Cristobal Picpican; "Varietal Improvement of Semi-Temperate Vegetable Crops" by Leoncia L. Tandang, Amelia M. Kimeu, Bonifacio A. Kebasen and Bernard B. Amlos; "Balanced Fertilization Strategy for Semi-temperate Vegetables in the Highlands of Northern Philippines" by Mario M. Marquez, Carlito P. Laurean, Jose A. Balaoing, Alexander W. Fagyan, Erma K. Mamaril, Gennie B. Soyon, and Darwin A. Basquial; "Insect Pest Management" by Eulogio E. Cardona, Jr., Casmir S. Ligat, and Clay M. Padillo; "Integrated Disease Management" by Luciana M. Villanueva and Nordalyn B. Pedroche; "Survey, Mapping and Identification of Plant Diseases and Alternative Host Weeds in Benguet" by Asuncion L. Nagpala, Lily Ann D. Lando, Janet S. Luis, Jocelyn C. Perez, Andres A. Basalong, Rachel K. Tudayan, Catherine D. Ba-a, and Judith P. Galeng; "Towards a Sustainable Vegetable Production: Characterization, Genetic Conservation and Propagation of Indigenous Vegetables (IVS) in the Highland Cordillera" by Lorenza G. Lirio, Manuel A. Balcita, Louisa P. Pladio, Joyce N. Paing, and Lito O. Ayyokad; and "Towards Commercialization of Dehydrated Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotus) and Shiitake (Lentinula) for Rehydrated Utilization and Tea Powder Production for Flour, Soup, Sauce, Coffee and Mushroom Mix" by Janet S. Luis and Jemma Rose M. Kilakil. In the same competition the research titled "Arabica Coffee R and D in the Cordillera" by Valentino L. Macanes, Mario M. Marquez, Andres A. Basalong, and Ammie S. Dayao won 2nd place in the regional division. A trophy and a cash prize of P200,000.00 was given. The CHED Best HEI Research Program Award intends to recognize the author(s)/ implementors and the HEI for the research program that has significant contribution to the advancement of the disciplines and to national development. Entries were evaluated and ranked according to the following criteria: Development impact to the contribution of the program to national development and societal productivity based on the technologies developed and economic and social benefits derived from the program; Impact on the discipline to the contribution of the program to science and technology, the improvement of academic programs, new knowledge/theory obtained from the research program, publications and papers presented in scientific conferences, seminars and other fora; Novelty or originality; Institutional and policy environment for the program; and Recognition given to the program. |
