MS and Local Officials Inaugurate Benguet Vegetable Processing Center
01.20.09 - JSTabangcura

The Benguet Vegetable Processing Center that started as a project proposal of Dr. Violeta B. Salda of the Northern Philippines Root Crops Research and Training Center (NPRCRTC) on 2007 was inaugurated by the officials of the Presidential Management Staff (MS) and local officials of La Trinidad and Benguet on January 16.

"In this center, you can see the promising economy of Benguet, good nutrition and food security," said Dir. Marietta T. Tamondong of the Presidential Management Staff of Malacañang.

She added that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo showed commitment for food security by giving the fund for the center.

The inauguration was also attended by Benguet Governor, Hon. Nestor B. Fongwan; La Trinidad Mayor, Hon. Artemio Galwan; DTI-Region I Director Florante O. Leal; and Engr. Raul Paz of the Bureau of Postharvest Research and Extension representing his director. All the officials recommitted their support to the center acknowledging that it will help boost the economy of the agriculture industry of Benguet and for other parts of Northern Luzon.

The Benguet Vegetable Processing Center produces a line of products ranging from cookies and breads to noodles and pasta enriched with vegetables from the pinakbet bowl of Pangasinan and the vegetable bowl of Benguet.

"We have an oversupply on vegetable production. We have to process surplus vegetables when oversupply makes (vegetable) prices go very low so we need this facility," said Mayor Galwan.

The center upon its initial operation in 2007 was first housed at the NPRCRTC. The construction of its building was funded by the 10 M released by PGMA from her Social Fund. The center operates in partnership with CAREO-MI, Farmers Associations and Farmers Assisted-Cooperators, DA, DOST, DTI, Go Negosyo/RFM/LMC/Nissin Monde, PCARRD/HARRDEC, DSWD/NFA, PIA and BPRE.
