Todwin Vincent Minas is a gold medalist in Wushu and Islay Erika Bomogao is a silver medalist in PencakSilat at the PalarongPambansa held on April 23-29, 2017 at Antique.

“This sport, Pencak Silat is new sa pandinig natin pero mas nilalaro nila internationally at World Cup, Asian Games, Southeast Asian Games and then nilaro nila una sa SCUAA national kaya hindi siya bago. It is a friendly defensive sport, it is very safe for student athlete kasi hindi gaano yung contact sa ulo but it is very challenging as well,” says Ryan Batinay, BSU-SLS Sports Coordinator.

Other athletes who were also able to compete in the Palarong Pambansa are Erica Kuengan in Futsal, Adrianne Jude Cayat in Pencak Silat, Marc Bie, Rolsky Lestino, Rael Collado, Junuel Fianza and Larjane Aludos in Football. Aludos is a member of the Junior Philippine Team (Under 14).

According to Batinay, he tries to train the high school athletes with the college athletes to increase their chances of advancing. The BSU-SLS competes as one unit against the colleges and institutes during the regular University Intramurals.

“Yung mga bata, ine-encourage ko na mag enroll sa trainings, rine-recommend ko sa mga gym, yung mga nanalong mga bata sila yung nag-additional courses sa gym,” he added that two of the athletes has trained with Team Lakay, a top performing Martial Arts group in Baguio City.//JSTabangcura
